Rueben was born and raised on a farm just outside an old township, His Father was a farmer, His Mum was a stay at home mum-mostly due to poor health after having five children. His Father worked long hours and spent most of his free time helping his ailing mother. Rueben grew up taking on responsibility from a very young age for his four younger siblings. Theirs was a happy childhood, full of love and opportunities despite his mother being poorly. Growing up, the children would listen spellbound as their parents would tell them of their family and country history.
His mother died when he was 13 years old. It changed the family dynamics, to say the least as a stepmother came onto the scene but it brought happy changes and a bigger extended family which Rueben enjoyed as Allison had three boys his age, all who were willing to help out and play around the farm.
He didn’t enjoy school and no one expected much from him. The one saving grace was his friendship with Cassandra Ducant. The two met at school and were inseparable. When they were in their teens they began to realize that their relationship ran deeper than just friends and they shared their first kiss and sexual experience with each other. She had turned his whole world upside down, filled up his soul and his heart. In short order, she had gone from a sweet romance that he wasn’t sure on since he found himself crushing on other boys, to his reason for living and breathing. He worked better when she was part of his life, he fought harder and excelled at his learning. He enjoyed life more and even understood the whole universe better, when she part of his existence, so much so he married her as soon as his basic training was completed for his dream job firefighting and Cassandra going into EMT training.
They both worked on their careers leaving things to progress naturedly to if they would have children then and there. After two years of both of them progressing in careers and nothing happening naturally they went to the Doctors. They were both looked at medically speaking and it turned out Cassandra was the one with an issue which shocked her, to say the least as she thought her fit and healthy.
Reuben didn’t judge he would have happily adopted to keep her safe and sound in his life but Cassandra saw it as her failing in her patriotic duty. First, they tried Fertility drugs, then Intrauterine insemination and any other procedure suggested but every month turned into a bitter disappointment. Reuben kept trying to convince his wife that it didn’t matter and there were plenty of children who needed homes. Cassandra spiralled into depression and sadness thinking she wasn’t enough for Rueben, not good enough to have children, not good enough in her job which everyone knew she loved. It broke Rueben’s heart to see the woman he loved in that state it took months of convincing Cassandra but she eventually agreed and they started to look into adoption trying to turn around their relationship.
Rueben thought they had turned a path until one shift where he couldn’t contact her at all. He thought nothing of it as she had mentioned going to meet some friends and he got called out to a shout at a car accident. On his return thinking it was strange he hadn’t even had a good night text he was given permission to go home an hour early. As soon as he got home he knew something was wrong, it was like stepping into the home of a stranger. He wandered through the house until he found Cassandra on the floor of the kitchen. He called an ambulance but it was already too late to save the women. An autopsy revealed that the woman had been stock piling her anti-depression pills, it had been planned for a night shift of Reuben’s knowing he would be too busy to notice until it was too late.
The very thought that Cassandra had been suffering enough to do that rather than talking to him haunts him and made it impossible to move on in the allocated time and he found himself going through the M.A.N.C camp and grieving at the same time. - Intimacy
